Many patients of Asian and African descent often desire ethnic rhinoplasty to improve any of the following issues: flat nasal bridge, underprojected tip, bulbous tip, and wide or flared nostrils. Furthermore, Asian and black rhinoplasty patients commonly possess thick nasal skin, which limits the extent of tip refinement that can be achieved and makes them prone to experiencing more prolonged nasal swelling in the recovery period, and are at higher risk of poor scarring including hypertrophic or hyperpigmented scars. What is Dorsal Augmentation?
Dorsal augmentation is one procedure within rhinoplasty that entails increasing the height of the nasal bridge (the dorsum). This can be achieved with native patient cartilage or an implant. Dorsal augmentation is commonly pursued by ethnic rhinoplasty candidates who feel they have a flat or wide nasal bridge, including those patients of Asian and African descent. Depending on how much augmentation is needed, Dr. Tina Ho utilizes septal or rib cartilage graft to create a dorsal onlay graft that is fit over the nasal bridge and underneath the skin.
What is Alar Base Reduction?
Alar base reduction or alarplasty is one type of rhinoplasty procedure that reduces the flare and/or width of the nostrils. This procedure is routinely desired by ethnic rhinoplasty patients including those of Asian, African, or Hispanic descent. The ideal width of the nasal base is typically equal to the horizontal distance between the eyes. Often additional external incisions need to be placed in the nostrils with excess nostril tissue removed or the nostrils brought in to bring about appropriate reduction in nostril size and flare. Dr. Ho is highly experienced in alar base reduction and will discuss with each rhinoplasty candidate whether they may benefit from this procedure. She strategically places her alar base reduction incisions and implements special suturing techniques to create very minimal, not easily detectable scars.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty: Before and After
This wonderful patient came to me for rhinoplasty consultation desiring improvement of the outer appearance of her nose. She underwent a primary rhinoplasty to take down her dorsal hump, refine her nasal tip, improve her nasal tip rotation, decrease the overall size of her nose, and decrease the size and flare of her nostrils. As shown in this video, she is healing beautifully eight months later, and we are so thrilled with her results. Given her thick nasal skin, she will continue to see increasing definition and enhanced results in her nose with time.
Septorhinoplasty: Before and After
30 year-old female patient came to me for a rhinoplasty consultation, most bothered by nasal deformity issues including prominent nasal bones, crooked nose, nostril asymmetry, dorsal hump, and downturned, round tip with history of prior nasal trauma. We pursued an open septorhinoplasty to take down her hump and smooth out her nasal bones, straighten her nose, lift and refine her nasal tip and improve her nostril asymmetry. She wanted to maintain stronger, higher nasal bridge to preserve her Italian ethnicity. We are so thrilled with her beautiful, natural results demonstrated in this video on year later. Ethnic Rhinoplasty and Jawline Contouring Surgery: Before and After
This lovely female patient had a history of prior cosmetic facial surgery including rhinoplasty, buccal fat removal, and chin liposuction. She desired additional nasal tip refinement and jawline and neck contouring. We pursued revision rhinoplasty as well as deep neck lift with chin augmentation. Patients with thicker nasal skin and facial skin overall tend to have less dramatic results and take longer to heal. We are so thrilled with her surgical outcome one year out.
