Introduction to Lower Eyelid Lift Surgery
Puffy or sunken undereye areas can be a cause for concern, but a lower eyelid lift in Philadelphia can reverse the fatigued look for a brighter and more energized appearance.
What is a Lower Eyelid Lift?
A lower eyelid lift is the reduction of hollows, wrinkles, sagging, and puffiness in the areas under the eyes. Aging, gravity, and reduced skin elasticity are some of the causes of these cosmetic issues.
A lower eyelid lift, also known as lower eyelid surgery or lower blepharoplasty, can offer patients a more rested and youthful appearance. Sagging, puffiness, and wrinkles in the lower eyelids can create a constantly exhausted expression. A lower eyelid lift in Philadelphia addresses under-eye bags and may be done in combination with other facial procedures.

What is Dr. Ho’s Approach to Lower Eyelid Lift Surgery?
Dr. Ho typically performs lower eyelid surgery under sedation or general anesthesia. Once it has taken effect, Dr. Ho creates a small incision. The transcutaneous incision is made right below the lash line and is used to address excess skin and fat. Another option, the transconjunctival incision, is made inside the lid and is specifically used to only address excess fat.
Once the chosen incision is made, excess tissues including protruding fat are removed as needed to tighten the undereye area. If transcutaneous incisions were made, Dr. Ho then closes the incisions with fine sutures. If transconjunctival incisions were used, those incisions do not require sutures and will close on their own.
Dr. Ho performs lower eyelid lift procedures on an outpatient basis. They can last for thirty minutes to an hour, but additional complementary procedures may prolong this.

Dr. Ho’s trifecta customized approach to lower eyelid surgery most often involves the following steps:
A scarless incision is created on the inside of each eyelid. Through each incision, the excess protruding fat is removed from each of the three fat compartments of the lower eyelids. This step reduces the puffiness or undereye bag appearance and leaves no outer scar.
Fat is harvested from the abdomen or thigh via liposuction. The fat is then refined and injected into the lower eyelids and cheeks to restore volume in these areas. This step addresses the facial volume loss and tear trough deformity that are commonly associated with aging lower eyelids. For more information on facial fat transfer, click here
CO2 laser resurfacing is performed along the lower eyelids, as well as on the rest of the face, to tighten the skin. This step allows Dr. Ho to avoid creating external scars and removing skin that may distort the lower eyelid shape. For more information on CO2 laser resurfacing, click here.
Good candidates are in good overall health, have significant lower eyelid issues that can only be improved with surgery, are non-smokers, and do not have any chronic conditions that could hinder the recovery process. They also do not possess significant dry eye or vision issues or major eye disease.

Your Lower Eyelid Lift Consultation
During the consultation, Dr. Ho will study your medical history, review any current medications, and discuss your goals to assess overall compatibility with the procedure. Dr. Ho will perform a thorough exam to determine whether you are an eyelid surgery candidate. A vision and tear test may be conducted to determine possible risk factors as well. Photographs will be taken for before and after comparison.

Recovery After a Lower Eyelid Lift
You may need several days of recovery time after your lower eyelid lift before you are allowed to return to your daily routine. Dr. Ho may prescribe medications to address any post-operative pain or discomfort.
Many patients experience bruising and swelling that will take a few weeks to resolve. You are discouraged from participating in intense exercise and other rigorous activities for two weeks to avoid complications.
