Introduction to Lower Eyelid Lift Surgery

Puffy or sunken undereye areas can be a cause for concern, but a lower eyelid lift in Philadelphia can reverse the fatigued look for a brighter and more energized appearance.

What is a Lower Eyelid Lift?

A lower eyelid lift is the reduction of hollows, wrinkles, sagging, and puffiness in the areas under the eyes. Aging, gravity, and reduced skin elasticity are some of the causes of these cosmetic issues.

A lower eyelid lift, also known as lower eyelid surgery or lower blepharoplasty, can offer patients a more rested and youthful appearance. Sagging, puffiness, and wrinkles in the lower eyelids can create a constantly exhausted expression. A lower eyelid lift in Philadelphia addresses under-eye bags and may be done in combination with other facial procedures.

What is Dr. Ho’s Approach to Lower Eyelid Lift Surgery?

Dr. Ho typically performs lower eyelid surgery under sedation or general anesthesia. Once it has taken effect, Dr. Ho creates a small incision. The transcutaneous incision is made right below the lash line and is used to address excess skin and fat. Another option, the transconjunctival incision, is made inside the lid and is specifically used to only address excess fat.

Once the chosen incision is made, excess tissues including protruding fat are removed as needed to tighten the undereye area. If transcutaneous incisions were made, Dr. Ho then closes the incisions with fine sutures. If transconjunctival incisions were used, those incisions do not require sutures and will close on their own.

Dr. Ho performs lower eyelid lift procedures on an outpatient basis. They can last for thirty minutes to an hour, but additional complementary procedures may prolong this.

Dr. Ho’s trifecta customized approach to lower eyelid surgery most often involves the following steps:

Am I a Good Candidates for Lower Eyelid Lift Surgery?

Good candidates are in good overall health, have significant lower eyelid issues that can only be improved with surgery, are non-smokers, and do not have any chronic conditions that could hinder the recovery process. They also do not possess significant dry eye or vision issues or major eye disease.

A lower eyelid lift in Philadelphia is often considered a permanent procedure as it can last a lifetime when cared for properly. The procedure removes excess fat from under the eyes that can not regenerate and thus will never return. However, results may vary depending on several factors such as age, skin elasticity, lifestyle choices, and genetics. In some patients, slight changes may become noticeable after a decade, requiring a touch-up procedure.

While there is no perfect age to undergo under-eye surgery in Philadelphia, the majority of patients are over the age of 40. The eyes often show the earliest signs of aging for many individuals. However, men and women of any age, who are at least 18 and concerned about the appearance of their lower eyelids, may be good candidates for this procedure.

Lower eyelid procedures are generally not covered by insurance as they are often considered cosmetic surgeries. However, in some instances, an upper blepharoplasty may be covered by insurance if the person’s vision is obstructed due to drooping eyelids. Although insurance does not cover lower blepharoplasty, many financing options are available to help make the surgery more affordable.

Most patients report very little pain after an eyelid surgery in Philadelphia. If discomfort is present, it typically peaks around 24-48 hours after surgery and is manageable with the use of over-the-counter medications. Swelling and bruising are common after this procedure and can be treated by elevating the head while sleeping and ice packs. These measures will also help to reduce any pain that may be present.

Risks are associated with all surgical procedures and must be considered prior to undergoing a procedure. The adverse effects that can occur after a lower blepharoplasty procedure include:

Asymmetry and scarring

Infections and bleeding

Dry, irritated eyes and blurred vision

Eyelid retraction

Vision loss

Double vision

Anesthetic complications

Eyelid lift specialists in Philadelphia will use their knowledge and experience to identify areas of the face that would benefit from a cosmetic procedure. A lower blepharoplasty can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or combined with other surgical or non-surgical procedures to enhance the rejuvenation potential and limit downtime.

Yes. A lower blepharoplasty can be effective at removing the excess fat that contributes to bags under the eyes. This reduces the appearance of dark circles giving the eyes a younger, more rejuvenated appearance. These results can be immediately noticed following the surgery, but swelling and bruising can obscure the final results, which may take months to become fully apparent.
